1.Social Difficulties
Female Aspies find it difficult to read or respond to social cues incorrectly. They may experience social anxiety and have a difficult time thinking deeply of their interests. Female aspies tend to work well in certain social interactions. But they may tend to find this extremely exhausting at times. Especially when being in a group setting with others. It can also make them extremely overwhelmed after too much social interaction.
2. Sensory Sensitivity
Female aspies tend to have a heightened sensitivity to certain noises, touch, and smell. In my case I have a sensitivity to lights such as neon colors like neon pink. An example of this is I have a very hard time with certain foods because of the textures. Some of these include, salads, and pot roast. Pot roast has a very stringy texture which I dislike. But, the worst one for me is with certain smells from balsamic dressing, and coleslaw. With taste I absolutely cannot handle pickled beets or mint toothpaste.
3.Executive functions
For female Aspies it may be hard for them to regulate their emotions. It can sometimes result in what is called “autistic meltdowns” or “Autistic episodes”. An example that I have that would best explain this is being stuck in a really high emotional state of emotional mind. Being in emotional mind means that your emotions dictate your decision making. I hope that makes sense to you.
4. Obsessive Interests
A great example of explaining this may be obsessions with certain sports like bowling for example. I have been trying to become better at bowling by watching YouTube videos of professional bowlers and then I tailor that to my physical abilities. Aspies can also have obsessions with certain books, tv shows or celebrities.
5. Camouflaging
Female aspies may mask their differences in order to seem normal. They may pretend to know a topic or subject that someone is talking about. Example: Anime. One day while I was playing video games on my Xbox some of my gamer friends that I game with love anime shows to watch on tv. While they were talking, I pretended to know about the anime show, One Piece to pass as like there is nothing autistic about me. So that is how I masked in that conversation.
6. Sleep issues
Female Aspies may also have issues sleeping during the night. It can be caused by their sensory sensitivities. Mine is caused by sensitivity to noise or bright lights.
Difficulties with eye contact
Female Aspies may also have a problem with keeping eye contact. For example when someone is telling you to look directly at them it for aspies it is hard to do this because it automatically puts up their “defense mode.” Defense mode means that they may feel like their being attacked mentally. That is exactly how it is for me in my case. It feels unnatural. Because when I think about how I want to reply back to you my eyes tend to dart around at first before I reply back to you. This is how I process information.
8.Emotional Regulation difficulty
Females aspies tend to have difficulties regulating their emotions. This may be due to changes in their routine that they are not expecting to happen throughout their day. In my case this happens when I have unexpected changes in my daily routine. Such as, wanting to be on the full court basketball team for Special Olympics but, being on the half court team instead. I was so set on this that my emotions were extremely hard to regulate at the time.
9.Stimming
Female aspies have something that is a classic sign of being autistic. This is called stimming. It is a regulation tool. They tend to repeat that behavior such as, tapping on the table, jiggling their leg, making certain noises, saying the same thing over and over for example. In my case I tend to pick at my fingers. I know that it is not good for me to do but, it is a regulation tool that I am aware of sometimes.
10. Mental Health Issues
Female Aspies can also experience issues with their mental health. Such as, anxiety or depression. It affects me in the following ways
- Major Depressive Disorder
- Anxiety
- Panic Disorder
- Adhd
- PMDD-period mood depressive disorder
